When the drop-off won't take your load
Most people reading this page should load the car on a Saturday morning and pay nothing — the table above is all you need. Before you drive out there, though, it is worth checking that your load actually qualifies. These are the four reasons people get turned away at the gate:
It is more than three trips
The free allowance is 3 loads per user per day — that means three separate round trips, not three bags. A stripped bathroom, a demolished wall or a full garage clear-out is usually well past it.
The vehicle does not suit it
Drop-offs take light vehicles and trailers up to 1.5 tons carrying capacity, and anything heavier is turned away. At the other end, an ordinary car boot is over its payload long before it looks full — broken concrete and damp sand are far heavier than they appear.
The load is mixed
Clean builder's rubble — bricks, concrete, sand, tiles — goes in free. Rubble with plaster, plastic, timber or general waste mixed through it is refused at the gate, and you have made the trip for nothing.
It is not household waste
These are residential waste drop-offs and proof of residence may be asked for. A contractor's load, or anything arriving on a removal truck, has to go to a Council disposal facility instead — Coastal Park, Bellville South or Vissershok — and is charged at tariff.
